“Linear Motor Drive Ultra High-speed Small-hole Drilling EDM K4HL” wins the Main Award at the 63th (2020) Best 10 New Product Awards
(Sponsor: Nikkan Kogyo Shimbun)

Linear Motor Drive Ultra High-speed Small-hole Drilling EDM “K4HL” has won the “Main Award” at the “63th (2020) Best 10 New Products Awards” given by Nikkan Kogyo Shimbun.

2020 was the 63th year of Nikkan Kogyo Shimbun’s Best 10 New Products Awards, which the publisher started in 1958 as a way to promote development of outstanding new products and help improve the level of technology of Japanese industry. From among the new products developed, prototypes built, and commercialized during the year, the products are selected and awarded each year. The awards celebrate creative inventions having a big impact in Japan and abroad, that attain the highest standards of performance in the world, and that greatly contribute to advancement in manufacturing or to improvement of Japan’s manufacturing technology.

The K4HL is a small-hole EDM machine equipped with linear motors on three axes that have been developed and manufactured in-house by Sodick utilizing 20 years of experience and know-how. Equipped with a newly developed automation system, the K4HL allows high-speed, high-quality, highly accurate precision hole drilling, and can be used to drill holes of differing diameters continuously over extended periods.

In domains such as the aerospace and energy industries, the automotive industry, medical devices, the semiconductor industry, and the electrical and electronics industries, it is becoming increasingly difficult to meet the need for processing such as narrow, deep holes that are difficult to drill, as well as high-quality holes in difficult-to-machine materials. Additionally, the novel coronavirus has accelerated the need for automation, and as a new product with the high specifications and versatility required to meet this need the K4HL is expected to be widely adopted, which won it the award.

MR30 Manufacturing Cell System for eV-LINE OPM Molds wins Japan Machine Tools Builders’ Association Award at the 47th (2017) Industrial Machine Design Special Awards
(Sponsor: Nikkan Kogyo Shimbun)

The MR30 Manufacturing Cell System for eV-LINE OPM Molds has won the Japan Machine Tools Builders’ Association (JMTBA) Award at the 47th (2017) Industrial Machine Design Special Awards, sponsored by the Nikkan Kogyo Shimbun. Vice President and Representative Director Kenichi Furukawa attended the awards ceremony held at the Hotel Grand Palace (Chiyoda-ku, Tokyo) on July 27, 2017.

The Nikkan Kogyo Shimbun launched the Machine Design Special Awards in 1970 with the backing of the predecessor of the Ministry of Economy, Trade, and Industry as well as the consent of the Japan Chamber of Commerce and Industry and other industry organizations, and 2017 marked the 47th year of the awards. Its purpose is to stimulate and advance the design of Japan’s industrial products and winning products are selected based on a comprehensive evaluation. The screening goes beyond just exterior design to consider a product’s quality, economic potential and marketability, its safety from an ergonomic perspective, and how it addresses environmental concerns and matters of human well-being. Every year, recognition is given to numerous forward-looking manufactured products for design sensibilities that anticipate their times and the impact they will have on industrial product development.

The MR30 is a cellular molding manufacturing system purpose-built for OPM molds—three-dimensional molds created using Sodick’s OPM Series of precision metal 3D printers with built-in cooling channels and integrated structures. This all-in-one system employs a unique cassette-type mold to combine an injection molding machine with its peripheral equipment. The machine permits manufacturing various kinds of plastic products in variable quantities. OPM molds maximize the cooling effect when molding, making it possible to shorten molding cycle times and curbing deformation of the molded product and thus achieving groundbreaking productivity improvements.
The MR30 was awarded the JMTBA Award for high marks overall as a product with great future potential for rebuilding a brand strategy aimed at achieving a common concept with that of the OPM series, adding an automated cassette mold changer system, offering centralized control of all molding data, and having been developed with addressing the potential for IoT in mind.

At the 55th (2012) “Best 10 New Product Awards” sponsored by Nikkan Kogyo Shimbun, our company’s "TT1-400A Ultra-high speed Machining Center" won the Main Award. President Yuji Kaneko attended an awards ceremony held on January 24, 2013 at the Hotel Grand Palace (Chiyoda-ku, Tokyo).
This award is presented to new products or newly invented technologies released between December 1, 2011 and November 16, 2012 which exhibit originality and also contribute exceptionally to our nation’s industrial technological improvement.

The "TT1-400A", an ultra-high speed machining center that adopts lightweight, highly durable carbon-fiber-reinforced plastic (CFRP) for the table and saddle of the XY cross table, is equipped with our company’s linear motors on every axis on the X, Y, and Z axis, and achieved a maximum table acceleration speed of 0.5G in cutting work. The system allows processing at an acceleration speed of 3 to 10 times faster than general machining centers (MC), which was highly regarded and received a well-deserved award.

(Sponsor: Nikkan Kogyo Shimbun)

At the 2012 "Cho" MONOZUKURI innovative Parts Award sponsored by Nikkan Kogyo Shimbun, our company’s "HAYABUSA, a high speed wire electrode for Wire-cut EDM", won the Machine Parts Award. Executive Director Nobuo Maie (Sodick FT) attended the awards ceremony, which was held on November 28, 2012 at the Hotel Grand Palace (Chiyoda-ku, Tokyo).

This award was created in 2003 for the purpose of contributing to our nation’s industrial and social development in order to rebuild our nation’s monozukuri (the craftsmanship and philosophy of Japanese manufacturers) by focusing on products and parts that do not usually get recognition due to their hidden nature but which deserve to be acknowledged for their important supporting role.

"HAYABUSA, a high speed wire electrode for Wire-cut EDM", eliminated the weaknesses of the high speed wire and brass wire and enabled high precision processing. It also offers great cost advantages, and thus it was highly regarded and won the award.
